Confession
Napoleon Dynamite: Well, nobody’s going to go out with me!
Pedro: Have you asked anybody yet?
Napoleon Dynamite: No, but who would? I don’t even have any good skills.
Pedro: What do you mean?
Napoleon Dynamite: You know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills… Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.
I was feeling rather inadequate about my lack of hobbies the other day. Outside of work, my main activities seem to consist of going out for brunch (Saturday and Sunday, no exceptions), challenging unsuspecting victims to games of Scrabble and Set, and chasing my dog around the apartment. Hardly skills Napoleon would deem worthy of luring the opposite sex.
I used to be super skilled. Sports year round. Objectively good at photography and drawing. I even played the classical guitar for a spell (although there was never any question of me being particularly gifted at it).
But these days, work saps a good deal of my creative energy (and even more of my time), and on the weekend, it’s nearly impossible to bypass lounging about in Dolores Park on a sunny day in favor of some more “productive” activity.
Fortunately, the Internet solved this problem for me. With just a few clicks and slightly short of $1K, I am now officially signed up for a basic sailing certification course. Which I totally plan on taking…as soon as the summer rolls around.
But in the interim, instant hobby! Now, when asked by a potential suitor what I do outside of work, I can oh-so-nonchalantly claim to be a recreational sailor. Getting my certification any day now. No big deal.
Tres sexy, don’t you think?
Now let’s grab brunch.
